Can’t Ain’t No
by Earl Bergland, 2011

Unfortunately some of us struggle clutching at life never quite realizing the thrill of knowing the difference between can’t and no. Some of us who are more enlighten delight in exploring the meaning of the word can. The child can’t walk; a few months later the child can walk. Interesting! The child can’t read at grade level; a few months later the child can read at grade level. Interesting! The football player can’t catch a pass; a few months later the player can catch a pass. Interesting! Ah, what factors contributed to the changes? Ah, what factors did not contribute to the changes?

Some of us daily dance on wooden feet singing no. A child with sad fearful face cringes away crying I can’t. How is it that some of us find so much comfort in the negative world of can’t. If we stop for the red light, we can’t get to work on time. Really? Can’t certainly can justify a lot of righteous types of behavior. Surely, we can’t be expected to stop eating cookies too?

Can we contribute something each day to help the can’t child become the can child? Being a role model is as good as contribution as any.
